A month ago I came across the Best Bite’s (BB) Abu Dhabi website and Facebook group. Membership is free and gives you some great deals at restaurants across Abu Dhabi. Being a major foodie, I had to join! Deals aside, the Facebook group is extremely active and members post new and exciting places to try every day. For about a week now the hot new restaurant being raved about was Hooked – a no frills seafood joint located in Najda. BB members can avail ½ kg free on the purchase of ½ kg of shrimp, crabs, or mussels. The offer was a good one, so the husband and I decided to try it out.
The restaurant was easy to locate on Electra Street and had a nice clean look to it. The ambience is minimal with an exposed ceiling, giving it a very modern feel. We were greeted warmly by the friendly staff and promptly seated. The waitress brought out some gloves, aprons and paper sheets to cover the table so we knew things were about to get messy!
We ordered Calamari (AED 19) with tartar sauce for a starter and 1 kg of shrimp (½ kg for AED 59) making use of the BB offer. You have the option to choose from three sauces (lemon pepper, garlic butter, house special) and a spice level (mild, medium, hot). We chose garlic butter – medium and lemon pepper – hot.
Within the promised 15 minutes, our shrimp was brought out to the table in plastic bags. I’ve never had food served like this before so it was different, but it went with the no frills feel of Hooked. I was expecting the calamari to arrive before the shrimp but it came a few minutes after. The calamari starter was good and had a nice crisp coating, the tartar sauce that came along with it was also different than any other tartar sauce I’ve tried. It had herbs in it that gave it a very nice freshness and had a good hit of lemon.
Now, the verdict on the shrimp. I could tell that it was very fresh and had been steamed perfectly. Both the sauces were flavorful and had a great taste although not spicy at all. The only downside for me was that they were not deveined, they come whole with the head and everything. The shrimp were large and juicy and that meant that most of them had a big vein in them which affected the taste. After a little extra work of removing the veins and dunking the shrimp back in the bag full of sauce, they were quite delicious! 1 kg turned out to be way too much for two people and we couldn’t finish the portions. Their dessert section looked tempting but we were stuffed!
While we were leaving we asked about what was upstairs, and found out that they have private karaoke rooms, a function room and a meeting room as well for rent on a per hour basis. We will visit again for karaoke and to try the other stuff on the menu soon!
